Dating Profile Photos in Medellín

Nobody in Medellín is doing this, so I’ll just say it plainly: I shoot dating profile photos. Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, whatever you’re on. I looked around and found photographers doing headshots, weddings, and models, but not one person offering dating photos in this city. Strange, given how many people here are single and swiping. So here we are.

Let me start with the bad news about your current photos. The gym-mirror shot is not doing what you think it’s doing. Neither is the selfie taken from six inches away, which makes your nose look like it’s arriving before the rest of you. And the group photo where you look great but nobody can tell which one you are? People swipe past that. They don’t play detective.

Here’s the thing the apps are quietly built on: the first photo does almost all the work. You get about one second. In that second a person decides whether to keep looking or keep scrolling. A blurry, dark, or confusing photo loses that second every time.

So what actually works? It’s simpler than you’d guess.

A real smile. Not the polite one you give the dentist. The kind that reaches your eyes. Cameras are brutally honest about the difference, and so are the people looking at your profile.

Eyes you can actually see. Sunglasses in the lead photo are a mistake. People want to see who they might be talking to.

One full-length shot. This one gets skipped constantly, and its absence is loud. If there’s no full-length photo, people assume you’re hiding something. Give them one and the guessing stops.

Variety. Not five near-identical selfies. A clean, sharp portrait, a couple of relaxed outdoor frames, one where you’re laughing at something. Different looks, different settings, all clearly you.

And the big one: look like yourself on a good day. Not a filtered stranger. The goal is that when you show up to the date, the person is relieved, not surprised. Over-filtered catfish photos might win the swipe, but they lose the coffee.
